Q: What is the size of the gallery?

    A: The gallery has 500 square feet of non-linear hanging space.


    Q: How many people visit the gallery a month?

    A: Our gallery doubles as our member’s lounge with approximately 1,000 members and guests frequenting the space.


    Q: Can I take pictures of the artwork?

    A: If you would like to share the exhibit on social media, please tag the MNjcc @milesnadalJCC #thegalleryatthej Please respect artist copyright and do not reproduce the image.


    Q: How do I show my work in the gallery?

    A: A call for submission is posted every fall. A completed application form must be submitted along with images of your work. The gallery season (Sept-Aug) is programmed one year in advance. (For example, a call for submissions will be posted in November 2019, closing in February 2020, for the September 2020 – August 2021 season)


    Q: What do you look for in a submission?

    A: We want the art to engage our audience not just on an aesthetic level, but on an intellectual and/or emotional level. The work should have deeper themes for the viewer to explore. The art has to go beyond a pretty picture. Connection is key. Artwork must also be appropriate for all ages. The Gallery at the J does not display works depicting violence or nudity.


    Q: Do I have to be Jewish to apply? Does the work need to have Jewish content?

    A: You do not. Our programs and services are guided by Jewish values and are open to all, regardless of race, origin or religious affiliation. We have found that many of those values are universal and the Gallery at the J is the perfect opportunity to explore them together.


    Q: Do you show artists who are outside of Ontario/Canada?

    A: Typically, we do not show artists outside of Ontario/Canada as we are unable to pay the costs of shipping/transportation.


    Q: Do you charge for the use of the space?

    A: No. If selected, the artist does not need to pay a rental fee.


    Q: Am I allowed to sell my work? Does the JCC take a commission?

    A: Yes. Artists are encouraged to sell their work. We take a 20% commission on all sales.


    Q: What mediums do you show?

    A: Photography, painting, textiles and mixed media. We are unable to show sculpture and video/audio installations.


    Q: How long is each exhibit on display?

    A: 3-4 weeks.


    Q: If selected, may I have an opening night reception?

    A: Yes, however it is at the expense of the artist.


    Q: Whose responsibility is publicity?

    A: The MNjcc will provide a listing on our website, our Culture at the J bi-monthly e-newsletter (distribution approximately 1,600), and The Canadian Jewish News. The MNjcc will also be responsible for creating an e-vite for the artist to distribute. Additional publicity is the responsibility of the artist.


    Q: Can I apply as an organization?

    A: The MNjcc has partnered with Jewish Music Week, The Ontario Jewish Archives, Holocaust Education week and many other organizations to bring our members and guests unique exhibits.     Q: Are there other opportunities to show work at the JCC other than The Gallery?

    A: We currently display artwork on our third floor wall space. The pieces must be 5-8lbs and no larger than 20x24. Exhibits run 6-8 weeks and pieces may be for sale.     Q: Are there art classes available at the JCC? Are you hiring instructors?

    A: We do not program painting classes as we do not have the space to store canvases and easels.
