    George Consiglio

George Consiglio Open MMAGeorge began in martial arts in 1967, doing a variety of different styles including Tae Kwondo, Boxing and Shodokan. In 1980, he began to teach his brother, Tony, and sister, Cathy. Noticing that his brother and sister had a lot of potential, he decided to take them to tournaments, many of which they both won. They began training at the MNJCC, at which point they named the club United Open Karate. In 1986, they moved to 702A Spadina Ave., where the Academy remained until 2011. After the building was sold, George returned to the MNJCC, where he has been since.
His style is to approach martial arts practically. George believes that it is important to give students the strategy to overcome any kind of disadvantage they may have, whether it be size or strength. The Academy’s fighting strategy is to be a moving target and attack from the angles, in order to take away any kind of size or reach advantage that the opponent may have. His philosophy is that if the bigger guy always wins, it is not an art. He preaches that self-defense is for self-defense in a must situation only. He compares it to taking extra money on vacation just in case of emergency – something that you’re glad to have, but always hope that you don’t need.
The primary focus of the Mixed Martial Arts Academy is to give the children the learning tools to use martial arts in other areas of their lives, including at school, home or work. The emphasized tools are self-discipline, self-confidence, self-esteem and focus on the task at hand. George’s teaching concentrates on sparring, self-defense, conditioning the body and discipline of the mind.
