Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am interested in becoming a Lifeguard. Where do I go from here?

A. In Ontario, lifeguarding is regulated by the Lifesaving Society. Several steps need to be taken to achieve a lifeguarding or NLS certification. Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid are all pre-requisites to the NLS course. Your path to becoming a lifeguard will look like this:

Bronze Star (for participants under 13 years of age) -> Bronze Medallion (13 + years old) -> Bronze Cross (13 + years old) -> Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ (pass) -> National Lifeguard (16 + years old)

Q: How do I become a certified swim instructor?

A. You must be 15 years of age to complete a swim instructor certification course. Check out what we have to offer in the MNjcc Aquatics Department!

Q: I am a swim instructor certified from a different swim instruction certification body. Am I able to teach swimming lessons at Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre?

A. The MNjcc Aquatics Department runs a Red Cross Preschool and Swim Kids curriculum as well as leadership courses offered by Lifesaving Society. In order to teach any of the Red Cross courses, you must be a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. There is a transfer course available through the Red Cross to transfer a LSS Swim Instructor’s certification to a Red Cross WSI certification. You can contact the Red Cross at www.redcross.ca for further details about the transfer program.
