The Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNjcc) has welcomed over two million people to the corner of Bloor and Spadina during the building’s 60+ year history. The changing makeup of our membership is a testament not only to the vibrancy and diversity of the Annex neighbourhood but to Toronto’s own evolution. We provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be active, learn, connect and participate in a wide range of cultural experiences. Rooted in Jewish values, the MNjcc is open to all.
The MNjcc is home to a 3800+ member state-of-the-art Fitness Centre, the 285 seat Al Green Theatre, four schools, three choirs, a wide range of arts and cultural activities, Jewish Life programming, and a robust adult cultural program. It is a founding member of the Bloor Street Cultural Corridor, and the lead organizer of the annual Annex Family Festival.
In 1953 we moved from Brunswick Avenue to this intersection and in 2004 we reopened a brand new centre, thanks to the support of the community through UJA Federation's Tomorrow Campaign and a lead gift from Miles Nadal. Through the years we have not only offered a home to the Jewish community, but to immigrants and artists, young families and seniors. In fact, throughout our history, our membership has been about 50% percent Jewish - reflecting our wide and diverse population.
The vital role of a community centre is more important today than ever. The MNjcc offers a complete range of recreational, educational, and arts and cultural programs so that our neighbourhood can come together and connect. It isn’t just about what you receive at a centre like the Miles Nadal JCC, but about what you take with you when you leave and what you give back. We are proud of the role the MNjcc has played in creating city leaders, building lifelong friendships and offering a foundation for families – a place where families can grow, where they can connect, where, in fact, they belong.
Welcome from the Board of Directors
Spring brings change for our members and families, including a new strategic plan and new leadership in the Executive Director’s office. The Board of Directors is pleased to welcome Harriet Wichin to the role, and while Harriet is a very familiar face around the MNjcc, we are confident that she will bring new perspectives and rise to new heights. And it is with great fondness that we also say goodbye to retiring Executive Director, Ellen Cole. We won’t miss her, of course, since she’s promised to return regularly to sing show tunes in the women’s locker room. Happy retirement, Ellen!
Change is afoot at the J, and if you splash in the pool or pose in downward dog on the rooftop, you just might feel it!
