Our Philosophy

Our program is lead by the interests of the children.

philosophy 1At the Thomas & Marjorie Schwartz Preschool Centre it is our strong belief that young children learn best through play. Children master many skills while exploring their environment. Our main goal as educators in this program is to offer children a program that is rich in opportunities encouraging social interaction. We strive to make each child develop a strong sense of self-worth and self- confidence. Our Learn Through Play philosophy is prevalent in our program. Throughout the day children have a variety of activities available to them including swimming, outdoor play, science, music, child-directed creative activities, cooking and many more. The chosen activities assist in developing a variety of areas of development. The children's art creations are never modeled. They are at liberty to add their own materials and use tools of their choice. The children are not forced to partake in any specific activity but teachers may attempt to encourage a child who remains in the same area of play to try something new. Academics are not stressed in our program. It is our belief that it is of utmost importance to assist a child in developing his/her sense of self-worth, social skills and decision making skills. When these skills are mastered a child will be capable of adapting to academic expectations quite easily. The children are surrounded by printed materials in the classrooms and will naturally become attracted to these. The children are introduced to numeracy and literacy via play-based methods. During daily group time the children partake in games that incorporate skills such as patterning, graphing, sequencing etc. No child will be made to feel inadequate or less capable than his/her peers. Through play children help each other out and learn from one another.
