Youth Karate

This course offers a balance of challenge and fun in a safe, non-violent environment. The main goal of the program is to provide children and youth with the strength and confidence to avoid conflict. While still including the physical training, this course seeks to develop skills that can be translated into everyday life: the ability to stand up for oneself; discipline and focus; having the confidence to present in front of a group; and self-awareness. In addition to the karate training, once per session a guest artist who specializes in a health and wellness topic or another form of martial arts will be invited to teach an introductory class in their field.

Emilie Decaen

Emilie Decaen Karate AcademyDuring her years of study, Emilie developed much more than combat techniques. Karate imparts important life skills, including: the strength and personal confidence to avoid conflict; the courage to present in front of a group; and the ability to stand up for oneself.

At age nine Emilie was targeted by a school bully. Her mother enrolled her in the Karate class at the Miles Nadal JCC not only to learn how to defend herself, but also to understand the philosophical difference between fighting and self-defense.

In 2014, Emilie returned to the JCC as a karate instructor. She continues to work with the specialty fitness staff to build a safe space for learning self-defense techniques, an opportunity to practice indispensable life skills through a highly active sport, and to create a karate program for all ages, gender, and abilities.
