Groove School of Dance!

A group of children dance on a stageGroove School of Dance offers exciting and unique dance programming. Groove's focus on self esteem and creativity, rather than competition, is what keeps the company growing. The atmosphere at Groove is family-friendly, whether it be the homemade costumes or the warm, loving teachers who make sure each child feels like the individuals they are. Groove is also one of the first dance studios that encourages children with special needs. Over the years children with autism, down syndrome, and visual and hearing impairment have danced here as well. Read more below to see the wide range of offerings for ages 3-12!

Groove is led by Angela Williams, Artistic Director of Groove School of Dance and Co-owner of Zodiactors Musical Theatre Company. Angela’s portfolio includes over 15 years of experience in jazz, ballet, gymnastics, hip hop, musical theatre and acro.

Groove Mini Jazz Hop

Students learn beginner jazz technique and some funky hip hop moves in this awesome class. Learn the essentials and dance your heart out to today's pop hits!

Groove Flip Stix

This class blends hip hop dancing and acro (dance and gymnastics combined) for an exciting session with amazing choreography! Flip, fly and stretch up, down and all around in this high-energy class.

Groove Shake Rattle and Roll 

Pre-dance students learn the essentials through dance games and fun activities. Ballet, jazz, and pre-gymnastics techniques are introduced in this fabulous class!

Emma K. Smit

Emma Smith GrooveEmma K. Smit, Head Teacher at Groove School of Dance is a graduate of Sheridan Institute’s prestigious Music Theatre – Performance program. She is also the resident voice teacher for Upper Canada Repertory Company and Stagecoach West Toronto. In between, she teaches private voice and piano lessons out of her home. Her dance training and experience has been eclectic, covering ballet, tap, jazz, hiphop, acro, breakdancing, salsa and ballroom. Music remains her first love, however, and she has an extensive resume of performance as a singer-songwriter. Emma works as one of the adult fitness instructors at Groove, as a Zumba teacher and one of the chief developers of the Ballet Barre Tone class. Personal health and fitness is something she is passionate about, and an experience she loves to share.

Donnie Geraghty

Donnie Geragnty GrooveDonnie Geraghty has been ‘popping’ and ‘breaking’ for over 15 years and has been a Head Teacher for breakdancing, popping, and hip-hop at the Groove School of Dance since 2008. Prior to Groove, Don’s eight years of teaching experience includes Foundations in London, Ontario – a break dance program through Western University and a recreation program at Greenwood Private School. Concurrent to being a teacher at Groove, Don also enjoys teaching ‘breaking’, ‘popping’ and hip-hop at the Street Dance Academy in Toronto. Donny’s numerous choreography and performance highlights include but are not exclusive to the Krump Free Zone Competition, “Red City” and the Battle of the Year competition in Toronto. In 2007, Don was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records for 24 hours of “B boy Cyphering” at the Vaughan Mills Outlet Mall raising over $15,000 for cancer research. While Don has enjoyed entering competitions for the past ten years, either one-on-one or with his crew, Albino Zebrah and Conscious Souls, his true love is ‘cyphering’ where he has a chance “to be free and express his true style”.

Meghan Barron

Meghan Barron GrooveMeghan Barron, Head Teacher at the Groove School of Dance, is a dancer, choreographer, actor, and singer based out of Toronto. She holds an honours diploma in Professional Actor-Training from Sheridan College, a specialist degree in Theatre and Drama studies from the University of Toronto and studied dance at the Ana Marie Oliver School. Meghan has been dancing since the age of three in a variety of styles including: ballet, jazz, tap, pointe, hip hop, modern and musical theatre. Meghan is an avid choreographer in and around the GTA. Some of her choreography credits include: Fame (Chicken Coop theatre), RENT (Royal City Musicla Productions), Lovelash (Entr’acte Studios), and most recently Legally Blonde! The Musical (Chicken Coop Theatre). When Meghan is not teaching or choreographing, she is fulfilling her passion by studying different modes of acting and performance in The Second City’s Long Form conservatory program. Previous theatre credits include: The Mouse Trap (Molly), Top Gun! The Musical (Goose), Jane Eyre (Helen Burns) and Sister Leo (Nunsens). Meghan is thrilled to be teaching at the JCC for Groove!
