Artists of every generation have an historical lineage of masters who have themselves derived their paintings from a synthesis of what came before, married to their sense of self in the age they lived in. The artist cannot produce anything of merit ignoring this historical continuum. Painters today must reinstate the act of painting as an important means of communication and expression of humanity, re-establishing its true aesthetic cognitive values which have been demeaned, distorted and diminished by the prevailing cultural pretensions of our time.
In Paul Peregal's case, painting honestly and directly from the spirit within and integrating certain pertinent intimate influences is a means of disabusing the fraudulence that has become today's art world.
About The Artist
Paul Peregal was born in Portland, Maine, U.S.A. He attended the School of Art and Design at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under the directorship of the founding member, Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven. Lismer was Peregal’s colour theory instructor. The artist also studied at Ecole des Beaux- Arts in Montreal and The Art Students League in New York.
Peregal has travelled and resided in the United States, Canada, England, Denmark, Israel and France. His shrewd perspicacious vision and driven vitality has produced strikingly uncanny portraits and explosively kinetic landscapes which figure prominently in collections throughout the world.
