This series of parenting workshops is a project of the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre and is supported by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. This is the place to ask questions, share experiences, process emotions and learn tools that can help you cope with everyday challenges.

Surviving the “Terrible Twos” (and Threes and Fours): Building Blocks for Emotional & Self-regulation and Teaching Young Children How to Use Them

This session will provide parents with a better understanding of why young children behave in the ways that they do, while providing strategies and techniques that will encourage the development of healthy emotional- & self-regulation skills.
Teenagers or Toddlers?: Understanding the science of the teen brain and how to deal with it
March 15, 2018: 7:30-8:45 pm
Parenting a Teen can be exasperating! In these two sessions, we will explore the science behind the teen brain and understand why teens sometimes seem like toddlers when they exert independence. We will also look at the common issues that teens face today in this changing world. We will have a guest speaker from the TDSB with expertise in the area of adolescence and teen issues.
Too Smart for Their Own Good?

This workshop will provide parents with information and support to understand the complex minds of kids who are identified as exceptionally bright or "gifted". Parents will develop an increased ability to understand asynchronous development and how it affects their child.
Parenting is Stressful: How to be better prepared for the tough stuff
April 26 & May 10, 2018: 7:30 – 8:45 pm
Finding balance is hard. Parents will develop awareness of the impacts of stress and anxiety on children and create plans to cut down on family stressors. We will also explore the impacts of culture and tradition and how this informs the way we care for children.

Why is my child so worried all the time? Parents of kids who seem anxious or worried a lot often wonder why. Kids should be carefree and playful right? Well, kids get stressed out too. This workshop will discuss the science behind childhood stress, inform parents of how to support their kids, and know when to seek help.
Let’s Talk About…Sexual Development: Understanding typical sexual development and supporting your child through the years
June 7, 2018: 7:30-8:45pm
Children begin to develop sexuality before they are even born. Although we think of sexuality as an issue for older children, kids have lots of questions and thoughts about sexuality starting at a very young age. This workshop will review typical developmental milestones, how to talk to kids about sex and ways to offer guidance throughout childhood and adolescence. A guest speaker from Toronto Public Health will be available at these sessions to share expertise on this topic.
Preparing for School: Planning ahead to start with success

In this session we will discuss ways to prepare your child for a school year filled with success. We will discuss ways to ensure your child’s needs are met in the classroom and what to do if they are not. Strategies will be reviewed so that you can get support for your child… and YOU!
